Cancer caused the Masterpiece
by Laura Wagner

As the title suggests there are challenges that throw unexpected curve balls. With a combination of resilience, determination and expert medical care, we remain optimistic that life will go on.

This has been the story of Gabrielle Protell’s courage and bravery when she learned that a rare form of cancer would necessitate the need for a below knee amputation. The road has been challenging but her fierce will to rebound and send a universal message of appreciation to her medical team at Memorial Sloan Kettering, was the impetus for Friday evenings charity- art event.

The idea was conceived when Gaby noticed a sign in the window of 160 Imlay Street in Red Hook for available space. She immediately contacted Marta Maletz of the Gambino Team at Compass, who are representing these spaces and a star was born! Between the brains, brawn, and stamina of both Gaby & Marta, a decision was made to use these raw spaces effectively and for the sole purpose of raising awareness for this worthy cause.

On Friday evening May 2nd, 160 Imlay rose to prominence as the co-star, of this production. The art which was generously donated by a group of (41) artists, ranging from abstract oils to photography and drawings became the main attraction, and star of this show. The response has been tremendous and for all who attended –it was a night to remember.

The art has been nearly sold out but with a few remaining pieces, it’s not too late, to add your contribution and become part of this memorable event.
